Basic Ballroom Classes:
Basic Ballroom 1
Our Basic Ballroom 1 Class is the perfect introductory class for anyone just starting out in the world of partner dancing. In this class, you will learn the beginning level material in Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Rumba, Cha-Cha, Salsa and East Coast Swing.
Basic Ballroom 2
Basic Ballroom 2 continues with the next level in each of the dances from the level 1 class, adding more advanced concepts and material to each dance. These classes operate in a six week rotating session whereas once a dance completes a six week session in level 1, that dance moves on to the level 2 class for an addition six weeks. Not sure what dance(s) you would like to learn? The Basic Ballroom classes are the best way to get a sense of the different dance styles taught at Top Hat.
Hustle Classes:
Intro to Hustle
This class is designed for students with little or no experience with the Hustle. The class will focus on the essential basic figures of the dance. A comfortable understanding of these figures is necessary before partaking in the Hustle 1 class. Hustle is a dance that was first danced in the 70's primarily to Disco music. With its Latin roots, Hustle is a popular dance that is danced to music ranging from popular 70's classics to many of the Top songs on the radio today. Fast paced and energetic, come out and find out why this dance is so much fun. Top Hat is known for having one of the best Hustle programs in the country, stop in and see why!
Hustle 1
This is an beginner/intermediate level class. The instructors will build on the basic figures by teaching longer combinations and detailed technique. The students will also begin to learn arm styling and variations on basic footwork. A solid understanding of the material taught in the Intro to Hustle class is required for this class.
Hustle 2
Hustle 2 kicks it up a notch as the patterns get more intricate and the turns become more numerous. Hustle 2 is the class where you will learn and work on the most used and sought after material on the social Hustle dance floor. A strong working knowledge of the material covered in the Intro to Hustle and Hustle 1 classes is required to take this class.
Hustle 3 is a fast paced intensive class for the advanced Hustle dancer. Advanced concepts, turn patterns, and styling techniques are explored in this Top Hat favorite.
Intro to West Coast Swing
Welcome to the wonderful world of West Coast Swing. In this class you will learn the basic steps from the very beginning. This is the place to start if you are interested in learning why this dance is sweeping the country as one of the most popular social dances around. With music ranging from Blues and Jazz to R&B and Top 40 pop music, this dance is extremely versatile and a favorite at Top Hat.
West Coast Swing 1
This is the place to learn the basics and build a strong foundation. The mysteries of 6 & 8 count patterns will be unraveled as you perfect whips, tuck turns, and other fun steps. If you have experience in West Coast Swing, consider taking this class to sharpen your skills.
Once you start this fun and incredibly popular social partner dance you won't ever want to stop. As one of the largest social dance scenes in the Philadelphia area, there are places to go out dancing Salsa every night of the week. In the Intro to Salsa class you will learn the step, terms, and concepts that will get you well on your way to joining the fun. Great for the brand new beginner, this Intro class operates in 6 week sessions preparing you with the information that you will need to move up to the Salsa 1 class.
Salsa 1:
Basics of salsa, such as cross body leads, under arm turns, inside turns and other necessary beginner steps will be covered in this class. In addition, general leading and following techniques will be taught. This class takes the basic concepts that are taught in the Intro class and adds more depth and variety by adding longer and more difficult turn patterns. Your solid foundation starts here.
Salsa 2:
Slightly more intricate dance steps including transition steps such as Enchufles, Copas, lassos, multiple spinning techniques. There will be a more detailed emphasis on leading and following techniques. At this stage of the game you are learning the heart of what it means to dance Salsa. Great patterns with an indepth look at the technical side of the dance make this class a must have for the Salsa lover!
Salsa 3 (Intensive):
All the moves you have seen and always wanted to learn. New material is taught every week. Styling tips are taught for both men and women, as well as spinning techniques and shines. The pace is fast! Little explanations and a whole lot of dancing! This class is not for the faint of heart as it is designed to stretch and challenge everyone on the floor. Give your dancing that advanced polish that will have you being one of the most saught after partners on the social dance scene.
Ladies Styling/Performance Team:
This class will be a mix of Body Movement, Rhythm, and Flare for ladies during partner dancing. Also learn Balance, Posture, Shines, and Musicality, all of which you can apply to your regular social dancing. This class will teach you great beginnings to fitting your dance into the music! This class is offered free of charge to gentlemen who would like to practice their steps and help out by providing the ladies with partners to practice their new skills.
